How the Drilling Industry Has Become Safer

Image
Since the first hydrocarbon well was drilled in 1859, the drilling industry has continued to make improvements in safety, performance, and environmental protection. There’s no doubt that the original drillers from 100 years ago, in the world of boomtowns and gushers, would not recognize today’s modern high-technology drilling rig fleet when compared to the wooden derricks they built.  As time has passed, the principles of safety and responsible stewardship of the environment remain core values of the energy industry. Especially in today’s world, the prevention of injuries and reduction of environmental impact is a critical need universally, whether in oil, geothermal, or other forms of energy production/development. The drilling industry’s advancements in technology harmonize with the significant improvements in safety protocols, training, and overall safety culture. By integrating new technologies into its operations, the energy industry has significantly reduced the risk of injur...

HOW DRILLSTRING ROTATION AFFECTS CRITICAL BUCKLING LOAD?

Buckling of tubulars inside wellbores has been the subject of many researches and articles in the past. However, these conservative theories have always followed the same assumptions : the wellbore has a perfect and unrealistic geometry (vertical, horizontal, deviated, curved), the friction and rotation effects are ignored, conditions relatively far from actual field conditions. How do tubulars buckle in actual field conditions, that is, in a naturally tortuous wellbore with friction and rotation? Can we apply theories developed for perfect well conditions (no tortuosity, no friction, no rotation) to actual well conditions? For the first time, this paper presents how the drillstring rotation affects the critical buckling load in actual field conditions. These new results have been obtained from an advanced model dedicated to drillstring mechanics successfully validated with laboratory tests. Firstly, this paper presents the new developments integrated in a recently advanced model for d...

HOW THE BIT PROFILE AND GAGES AFFECT THE WELL TRAJECTORY

The importance of wellbore deviation is well recognized by the drilling industry. An analysis of the directional behavior of a drilling system must include the directional characteristics of the drilling bit. A comprehensive analysis of the directional behavior of PDC bits is presented in this paper, including the effect of bit profile, gage cutters and gage length.  The analysis of the directional behavior of PDC bits presented in this paper shows that each part of the PDC bit (bit profile, active and passive gages) plays a major role on the walking tendency and steerability of the bit. A quantitative evaluation of the contribution of these factors on the well trajectory (inclination and azimuth) is given. A full-scale directional drilling bench was built to measure, for the first time, the walking tendency and the steerability of PDC bits. The results obtained demonstrate that the bit profile, the gage cutters and the gage length have a significant effect on the walking tendency ...

Directional Drilling :- EXPERIENCE NEXT-LEVEL PERFORMANCE

H&P’s directional drilling solutions leverage proprietary technology that makes intelligent, real-time decisions so that our customer-partners can be confident in the accuracy and repeatability of their drilling operations. Complex formations require customizable solutions that can simplify and automate the directional drilling process to help drive well-informed decision making both before and during drilling operations. Our Bit Guidance System makes intelligent decisions based on economics, helping lower drilling costs while increasing production. The AutoSlide® automated drilling platform responds by autonomously executing slides that minimize tortuosity and sliding footage with increased precision. ACHIEVING THE NEXT LEVEL WITH NEW INDUSTRY STANDARD DRILLING RIG

Helmerich & Payne, the global leader in drilling rigs and technology, is expanding its partnerships in the Middle East with a customized Flex3 rig. This updated design, the newest addition to the industry standard FlexRig fleet, is uniquely enhanced for mobility and agility in Middle East terrain, without compromising unconventional pad drilling that advanced drilling programs require. Unlike most conventional rigs, this Flex3 walking rig is a side saddle configuration to reduce flat time during common rig activities such as drilling, pad to pad rig moves and well to well rig walks. It was thoughtfully designed with environmental stewardship and safety in mind. A hookload of 1,000,000 pounds, a 720,000-pound setback capacity, and the capacity to set almost 24,000ft of 5 ½-inch drillpipe in the racking board, equips the rig for highly complex lateral wells. Its walking capability offers the flexibility of 500ft in a straight line, or multiple rows within a 200 x 50 ft box. A patente...

AUTOMATED GEOSTEERING WITH FAULT DETECTION AND MULTI-SOLUTION TRACKING

Development of autonomous drilling technologies requires the automated analysis and interpretation of Logging While Drilling (LWD) data to optimally land the well in the target formation and keep it in the pay zone. This paper presents a fully automated geosteering algorithm , which includes advanced LWD filtering, fault detection, correlation, tracking of multiple interpretations with associated probabilities and visualization using novel stratigraphic misfit heatmaps. Traditional geosteering uses manual stretch, compress and match techniques to correlate measurements along the subject wellbore against corresponding reference type logs. This results in a crude representation of strata by linear sections with offsets at fault locations. Instead of automating this manual process, we instead determine the possible interpretations as solutions of a geophysical inverse problem in which the total misfit between the subject and reference data is minimized.  Interpretations are parameteri...

ADDING VALUE THROUGH Drilling AUTOMATION

Image
True Single-Button Execution Challenge In a volatile and unpredictable industry, immediate cost savings can be of incredible value. One way to achieve this is by reducing the number of on-site field employees through automation: In addition to the direct benefits of automating the directional drilling process, the H&P Bit Guidance System , partnered with AutoSlide® technology , decreases the number of personnel needed to drill the well. The Bit Guidance System uses task automation, forward modeling and automated decision making to guide the driller for more accurate positioning of the bit while drilling horizontal wells. AutoSlide technology receives the sliding instructions from the Bit Guidance System and automatically orients and holds toolface by controlling the rig equipment. The technology performs the slide in a true single-button execution. Interesting, right? TRANSFORMING FEEDBACK AND ACCOUNTABILITY: A PATH TO TRUST AND GROWTH AT HELMERICH & PAYNE

Image
HSE feedback and accountability are often met with resistance, evoking feelings of discomfort among many individuals. At Helmerich & Payne , these concepts have instead been reframed to Actively C.A.R.E.®, creating an environment built around trust, open communication between managers and employees, and peer-to-peer support. Recognizing the need for a shift in perspective, H&P embarked on a journey in 2015 to reshape its approach to safety and organizational health. This shift highlighted the importance of being proactive and consistent in addressing behaviors, both in the field and office, paving the way for a culture of trust and pursuit of HSE excellence. Employee behaviors are complex and not always easy to comprehend. Yet, at their core, most employees share a common desire: to excel in their roles and contribute to the success of the organization. In their pursuit of these goals, employees sometimes extend themselves beyond established safety norms and standards at times...
